Minors and Tracks
The Conservatory of Music offers several 20-unit music minors open to students who are non-music majors. Music majors may not minor in music. Music majors may earn a track in music.
Students may apply for a music minor by contacting the Conservatory’s Office of Academic Affairs. Students admitted to a music minor program are assigned a faculty advisor to direct their course of study.
Students must complete a minimum of 20 units with a minor grade point average of 2.0 to earn a minor in music.
Students pursuing a music minor must meet the prerequisites for a given course.
Minor in Jazz Studies
- Students must complete a minimum of 20 units with a Pacific minor grade point average of 2.0 to earn a minor in jazz studies.
- 20 units selected from MUJZ, MPER 060 (Jazz Combo), MPER 075†, or MAPM 011-024†
- † Placement audition required
Minor in Music
- Six units in MCOM courses
- Six units in MHIS course
- Eight units of Music Electives*
- *May include MPER 073, 075†, 080 or MAPM 011-024†

Minor in Music Industry Studies
Students must complete a minimum of 20 units with a Pacific minor grade point average of 2.0 to earn a minor in music industry studies.

Tracks for Music Majors
The Conservatory of Music offers several tracks available to music majors. Tracks require a minimum of 12 units in coursework in one area of emphasis beyond coursework required in a student’s music major.
Jazz Studies Track for Music Majors
Music majors must complete a minimum of 12 units with a track grade point average of 2.0 to earn a track in jazz studies. It is open to music majors meeting the appropriate prerequisites.
Jazz Studies Track Requirements:
- 12 units in MUJZ, MPER 060 (Jazz Combos), MPER 075†, and/or MAPM† (with a Jazz faculty member) beyond those required in one’s music major.
- † Placement audition required.
Music Composition Track for Music Majors
The track in music composition is intended for music majors who wish to pursue additional coursework in music composition. It is open to music majors meeting the appropriate prerequisites. Music majors must complete a minimum of 12 units with a track grade point average of 2.0 to earn a track in music composition.
Music Composition Track Requirements:
- 12 units in MCOM courses beyond those required in one’s music major.
Music History Track for Music Majors
The music history track is designed for music majors who wish to pursue additional coursework in the field of music history/ethnomusicology. It is open to music majors meeting the appropriate prerequisites. The requirements include nine units of music history courses beyond what is required in one’s music major, and at least three units of individualized research. Music majors must complete a minimum of 12 units, with a track grade point average of 2.0 to earn a track in music history.
Music History Track Requirements:
- Nine units of MHIS courses beyond those required in one’s music major.
- Three units of individualized research in MHIS.
Music Industry Studies Track for Music Majors
The music industry studies track is designed for music majors who wish to pursue additional coursework in the field of music industry/music management. It is open to music majors meeting the appropriate prerequisites. Music majors must complete a minimum of 12 units with a track grade point average of 2.0 to earn a track in music industry studies.
